Social media 101: A Beginners guide to Twitter, Facebook and beyond by Andy Walker In this talk I will introduce the idea of what "social media" is on the Internet and why its such a hot trend. Then I'll discuss the two biggest social media sites: Twitter and Facebook. In both cases, I'll explain what they are for, why they are popular. How they work, and how the can be useful. I'll also explain what pitfalls there are. And then provide some tutorial videos on the web that can help the audience delve deeper into them on their own time. Then we can do a Q&A at the end. There will be the usual Q and A at 7:00 followed by the main feature at 7:30. |

Podcasts & Netcasts - A webcast is a media file distributed over the Internet using streaming media technology to distribute a single content source to many simultaneous listeners/viewers.
- A webcast may either be distributed live or on demand.
Essentially, webcasting is “broadcasting” over the Internet. - A podcast is a series of digital media files (either audio or video) that are released episodically and often downloaded through web syndication.
- The word podcast usurped webcast in common vernacular, due to rising popularity of the iPod and the innovation of web feeds.
Netcast is the term used by people who distribute their shows in multiple ways over the internet - iTunes is Apple Computer Company’s place to acquire and share Media.
It includes Music, Movies, TV Shows, Radio and Podcasts. Podcasts come in two forms Audio and Video. - They originated to supply content to Apple’s iPod. Since the iPod is an off air device.
- Lets start by focusing on getting Podcasts through iTunes
- To get started you need to install iTunes on your computer. This is generally done by downloading and installing the software from
http://www.Apple.com/ca/itunes - TIP: Do not initially let iTunes automatically search for files. If you have media already on your PC it tends to load everything.
It is time consuming to remove unwanted links from it’s library - You can subscribe to podcasts from either:
A Website that offers it as a feed. or From within the iTunes store - Let's Start with the iTunes store
- Apple has an online store where you can sign up for a subscription for a podcast.
- Most podcasts are free, but some are paid subscriptions.
- Podcasts are daily, weekly or sometimes monthly series.
They can be a limited series used for training or education. There are many items in the iTunes store for sale so you may have to hunt for free items. You can do this by searching. Lets have a look - You do not need an iPod to get and see podcasts
- It is convenient if you are traveling to have an iPod to easily take podcasts with you.
- You can listen to or view podcasts on your computer.
If you have an iPod you must have the podcasts on your computer as well. Although you can specify a subset that you wish to load on the iPod. - Audio Podcasts are great for listening while travelling.
They are small and fast to download. - Video Podcasts are excellent for viewing on a PC or connected TV
They are many times larger than Audio and can take a very long time to download. They also take up a high volume of storage space on your PC - How to get a Podcast (Netcast ) from a website
- Some Web sites provide one or more buttons that automatically provide you with a subscription to a podcast.
- Some Web sites provide multiple ways to download their programs.
- Some Web sites provide RSS (Really Simple Syndication.) feeds for their content.
This way you can download a podcast content automatically without Tunes Lets have a look Sites viewed during podcast http://www.grc.com/securitynow.htm http://www.thisweekintech.com/ http://www.butterscotch.com/shows.html http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/books/corduroymansionsbyalexandermcca/ http://www.cbc.ca/podcasting/index.html?region Comedy Audio instalment Novels Photoshop Killer Tips French Maids How-to's Backpacking Light Magazine CBC News Lets have a Look Podcasts seen: - Backpacking Light Magazine Podcasts Carol Crooker

Questions & Answers / Questions and Answers / Re: can't print all pages info re vacation rental

Andrew I presume you are using Internet Explorer to find the properties. When you click on Print Preview, it will show you the first page but at the bottom of the screen it will indicate that it is 1 of 5, for example. This is to allow you to see how many pages there are in the document. If you want them all, just go back to Print and all the pages will print. Your print screen allows you to print all the pages or just some of the pages. I hope this helps. Clare |

Questions & Answers / Questions and Answers / can't print all pages info re vacation rental site

I've been researching accommodation for rent on the internet. When I find a condo that interests me I first look near the top on the document itself for a print icon. If I can't find one there I select: FILE PRINT PREVIEW. It says 1 of 1 but I know there are 6 pages of information about this condo and I want to print out all pages How do I get all the pages of that particular condo listing to print? p.s. I got the list of condos by typing in the GOOGLE box on top line - words that would bring me directly to the closest geographic area I wished to search. That part worked well and I got a long list of properties. I then selected certain condos to investigate, one at a time. The problem only arose when I tried to print out all the pages that described that property. I read all pages so I knew how many there were. |

Questions & Answers / Questions and Answers / Re: I phone sound clips

Yes, thank you John it answered my question. I am able to play back the voice recording in a number of players, however it will not play back in a Powerpoint Presentation for which I wanted to use it. It seems that I Tunes does not like to be used in media files other than themselves. I found a program that works really good since that time and it is called "AVS Audio Recorder". The output file is "MPEG Layer 3 Audio". It is compatible with Power Point, and works well! Thanks again; Jack Moed. |

Hi, As I demo'd at the end of the Podcast & Netcast presentation here are the step by step instructions to find your Sound files. This should work in most versions of Windows although the Directories where the file is found may be different. - Select the sound clip you wish to see where it resides. Right Click on it and select "Show in Windows Explorer"
- The Windows Explorer window should appear, to locate the exact location you may need to select from the Menu "Tools" and then the Tab "Folder Options" and then "View". This should have a list of Check boxes Make sure that the Box for "Display the full path in the address bar" is checked. Click the "Apply" button and the "OK" button.
- You will now find the Directory location in the address bar at the top of the window.
- Right Click on the file and you should see a menu if it has an "Open With" item then you can try a player other than iTunes to see if the particular file will play in it. If there is no menu item called "Open With" then you can only play it in iTunes. If this is the case have a look at the next step.
- If the File Type is not visible in the window you can right click on the name and select "properties" this should show you the type of file. Note this down in case you may need it to find an appropriate player. I recommend VLC a freeware player that you can find at the www.videolan.org site. It plays most media files. If you still cannot play the file you will need to do an internet search for a player that can play the File Type you noted.
I hope this helps Regards, John |

Questions & Answers / Questions and Answers / I phone sound clips

I have a few recorded clips on my I phone which I would like to move to my "documents". They are in my "I tunes" file on my computer but I don't see any way to export them to my documents so I can use them in another application. What I have been able to do is, record it in "Audacity" and then export it to my documents (which works fine) But I think that there must be another way I don't know about. OS is Vista. Thanks for helping; Jack Moed. |
